A little windowsill herb corner
A small green corner can make your kitchen feel more inviting.
Begin with the space you have
Notice the light on your windowsill and measure the usable area before choosing a planter. Select herbs with growing instructions suited to the conditions you can offer.
Start small
Choose one or two herbs you already like cooking with. Follow the care guidance supplied with each plant or seed packet rather than assuming every herb wants the same routine.
Keep the setup practical
Check the planter’s drainage arrangements and use a suitable tray to protect surfaces. A small watering can and clear labels can help you keep the corner organised.
Bring it into your routine
Use a trusted recipe for ideas with your chosen herbs. Keep a note of what you planted and the care advice supplied so you can learn what works in your own space.

Compare the growing instructions with the actual window
Record the window’s usable width, light at different times and whether opening it will move or knock a planter. Include the tray and any handles in the footprint. Check the instructions for the chosen plant or seed; different herbs can require different conditions. This page is an organisation guide, not a universal sowing calendar or a prescription for watering every pot on the same day.
Check drainage and protect the surface without creating an arrangement you cannot inspect. Make it easy to reach each container and read its label. If you grow more than one herb, retain the individual care information instead of merging everything into one assumed routine. Do not use a decorative vessel as a planter without checking its intended use and drainage arrangement.
Connect the corner to the kitchen
Choose herbs you can identify and already use in trusted recipes. Keep non-edible plants separate and clearly labelled; a plant’s appearance alone is not proof it is safe to eat. Record what you planted, where the instructions came from and when you changed the setup. Use those observations to decide whether another pot will be manageable before buying a larger stand or a complete growing kit.
